How to choose a leather backpack

Three things decide whether a leather backpack is worth its price:

  • Grade first. If the listing states full-grain, it will hold structure and patina for years. If it says genuine leather or stays silent, treat it as a shorter-term bag and price it accordingly. The grade comparison explains why the wording matters more than the photos.
  • Laptop fit.Check the stated laptop size against your actual machine, and look for a padded, separate compartment rather than one open sack. A 15.6" bag will not always take a larger 16" or 17" laptop.
  • Weight.Full-grain is heavy before you put anything in it. A leather backpack will always weigh more than a nylon one — that is the trade for a bag that lasts. If ounces matter most, a lighter genuine-leather or hybrid bag may suit you better.
