Best Leather Briefcases

Five business briefcases compared on the spec that decides how long a work bag survives — the leather grade — plus laptop fit, structure and format. With the pick that states full-grain, and the ones that don't.

By Stephen V.Last updated How we pick

A briefcase does the hardest job any leather bag does: it carries an expensive laptop, every workday, and gets set on floors and flexed at the corners while it does it. That is exactly why the grade of the leathermatters more here than the shape or the brand. Full-grain keeps the hide’s tight, strong top layer, so it scuffs into a patina instead of cracking and peeling at the folds; “genuine leather” is a lower grade that photographs fine and tires within a couple of years of daily carry.

We haven’t carried all five of these to the office for a decade — nobody honestly has. Instead we read each listing for the one spec that predicts lifespan (does it actually say full-grain?), then weighed laptop protection, hardware, structure and format on top. Where a listing won’t state its grade, we say so plainly: that blank is a finding, not a detail we forgot to check. A luggage-brand toploader with an unstated grade can still be the right buy — it just answers a different question than a stated full-grain attaché.

How this is funded:we earn a commission if you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. It never changes which product we recommend, and we’ll tell you when we’d skip one. Full disclosure.

How to choose a leather briefcase

Four things decide whether a work bag is worth buying, roughly in this order:

  • Grade first. If the listing states full-grain, it keeps the hide’s strongest layer and can genuinely last a decade or two of daily carry. If it states top-grain, expect a smoother, more formal finish that lasts nearly as long. If it says genuine leather or stays silent, treat it as a two-to-four-year bag and price it accordingly. See full-grain vs. top-grain for why the wording matters.
  • Laptop protection.A dedicated, padded compartment sized to your machine beats a bag that merely fits it. The best designs suspend the sleeve off the base so the laptop stays clear of the ground when you set the bag down. No mention of padding on the listing usually means there isn’t much.
  • Format and structure.A hard attaché stands up on a desk and reads most formal; a soft satchel or messenger is easier to live with on a commute but slouches. Decide how formal you need to look before you decide how structured a bag to buy.
  • Hardware and stitching. The first things to fail on a work bag are the zippers, the strap hardware and the thread at stress points. Solid metal zippers, riveted strap anchors and tight, even stitching are the cheap tells of a bag built to last.

One more thing: whatever you buy, a few minutes with a conditioner a couple of times a year roughly doubles how long it looks good, and a full breakdown of the criteria above lives in what to look for in a leather briefcase. If a sling suits your commute better than a handle, the best leather laptop bags roundup covers the messenger format.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best leather for a briefcase?

Full-grain leather. It keeps the hide's strongest top layer, so it resists the daily scuffs a work bag takes and burnishes into a patina instead of cracking at the folds. Top-grain is a close second with a smoother, more formal finish. Anything sold only as 'genuine leather' is a lower grade that won't last the same way.

How long should a good leather briefcase last?

A full-grain briefcase that's occasionally conditioned can last 10-20 years and look better with age. A top-grain bag is close behind. A 'genuine leather' or unstated-grade briefcase more typically lasts two to four years of daily carry before the corners scuff through and the hardware or stitching goes.

Attaché, satchel or messenger — which briefcase format is best?

It depends on your commute and dress code. A structured attaché stands up on a desk and reads most formal, but hangs off a handle. A satchel or messenger slings across your body, which is far more comfortable for a train-and-walk commute, but looks more casual and slouches. Match the format to how you actually get to work.

Do I need a padded laptop compartment in a briefcase?

If you carry a laptop daily, yes. Look for a dedicated, padded sleeve sized to your machine rather than a bag that just happens to fit it. The best designs suspend the sleeve above the base so the laptop stays off the ground when you set the bag down. If a listing doesn't mention padding, assume there isn't much.
